This time last year, Jim was invited to photograph Theatre on the Fly, situated in West Sussex. Created by design collective Assemble and a team of over 40 volunteers, the temporary theatre was constructed to celebrate Chichester Festival Theatre's 50th birthday. As part of the theatre's wider programme, this innovative space hosted a nine-week programme based around three shows from young directors.
The building, inspired by its namesake fly-tower, offers an extraordinary glimpse into the usually hidden mechanics of the theatre space. Curious about this giant shed-like construction built from scaffolding, chipboard and plastic pond liner, Jim jumped at the chance to head over and shoot the project on a sunny day when plenty of visitors were milling about, making the most of the innovative location.
